    Steel Standards

ASTM's steel standards are instrumental in classifying, evaluating, and specifying the material, chemical, mechanical, and metallurgical properties of the different types of steels, which are primarily used in the production of mechanical components, industrial parts, and construction elements, as well as other accessories related to them.

The Four Types of Steel Metal Supermarkets

Quite often our customers will ask us about the different types of steel we sell, and what to look for when picking steel grades, shapes and sizes. While there are many ways to categorize steel, we find it useful to break the types of steel down into four categories (C arbon, A lloy, S tainless and T ool Steel).

Stainless Steel Grades Mid America Stainless

Uses include exhaust manifolds, flash boilers, stack liners, firewalls, pressure vessels and boiler casings. Type 404 excellent formability, durability, good deep drawing, and good ductility. Common uses include heat exchangers, deep draw parts, automotive components such as radiator and gas caps.

Most Common Uses of Stainless Steel

Special grades of stainless steel have been developed for use in these industries which feature enhanced resistance to corrosion over a wider range of temperatures. High-grade stainless steel is vital in the construction of storage tanks, valves, pipes, and other components.

Stainless Steel Grades Chart PDF -

Stainless steel grades are lumped into classes-- the main ones being austenitic, ferritic, and martensitic. The metalworking powers-that-be developed these classes to consolidate chemical and mechanical properties into categories based on the needs of customers’ uses .

What are the different types of Steel and its Uses?

Because steel is basically just iron and carbon, there are many many different grades and qualities avaliable. But they are usually split into four main categories carbon steel (mild, medium carbon, and high carbon), alloy steel, stainless, and tool steels.

Properties of & Uses for 8620 Grade Steel Sciencing

The steel alloy of grade 8620 is also called nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel. It is a sturdy alloy, largely composed of carbon, with many uses in the manufacturing trades. Properly hardened and formed, it can be used to make hard-wearing machine parts.

    Steelwool Grades and Applications

Steelwool is produced in many different forms to better suit many types of applications. Steelwool is available in 8 different levels of abrasiveness or “Grades”. The grade is determined by the thickness of the wire of which the wool is made of.

Properties & Uses of Steel Sciencing

The construction industry uses about a quarter of the world's steel, which can be found in almost every building made by humans. Stainless steel finds use as cutlery material; chef knives are made of different grades of knife steel; and cast iron pans remain a popular kitchen accoutrement.

    SAE steel grades

The SAE steel grades system is a standard alloy numbering systems for steel grades maintained by SAE International. In the 1930s and 1940s the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and SAE were both involved in efforts to standardize such a numbering system for steels.
